Aviacion Militar Dominicana The Aviacion Militar Dominicana was formed by the Army during the early 1940's, with some Aeronca L-3 AOP and American training aircraft, including Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydets, Vulotee BT-13 and North American AT-6. It was not until 1948 that an expansion plan was authorised, buying obsolete Bristol Beaufighters as well as slightly more modern de Havilland Mosquitoe and Republic F-47D Thunderbolt fighter bombers and a small number of Boeing B-17G Fortress bombers. By the early 1950's, these aircraft were replaced by a squadron of 20 North American F-51D Mustang fighter bombers, later augmented by the AMD's first jets, 20 de Havilland Vampire fighter bombers, as well as 7 Douglas B-26 Invader bombers. This period also saw the arrival of 2 Convair PBY-5A Catalina amphibians, 6 Douglas c-47 and 6 Curtis C-46 Commando, 3 DHC-2 Beaver and 3 Cessna 170 for transport and communications aided by Dominica's membership of the Organisation of American States. Helicopters arrived, initially 2 Bell 47 and 2 Sikorsky H-19, followed by an Alouette III and 2 Alouette 11. Training used North American T-6 Harvards and Beech T-11 aircraft. In the early 1970's, 7 Hughes OH-6A helicopters were obtained. The Dominican Air Force |
